Fogos and Porto de Ana Clara

The coastal settlement of Fogos and Porto de Ana Clara is situated on the coast of the Candelária parish, within the Madalena municipality. It forms an integral part of the Vineyard Culture Landscape of Pico Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Access to this settlement was facilitated by the Caminho do Poço (Well Path).

Originally, this settlement was characterized by a grand manor-style residence, overseeing production complexes comprised of distillation apparatus and warehouses positioned near a port. These facilities were surrounded by expansive vineyards and fig orchards. Notably, a tidal well is located within this settlement, historically vital for supplying water to the Candelária parish residents and supporting the operation of the distillation equipment.

Within this settlement once stood a chapel devoted to Our Lady of Conception, although its existence was tragically terminated by the cyclone of 1893. In the post-phylloxera era, smaller traditional structures, predominantly single-storey, began to emerge on the fringes of the central nucleus. Presently, these structures predominantly serve as compact wine cellars and seasonal dwellings.
